Amherst College Event Calendar   Academic Year at a Glance

On Friday, Dec. 4, from noon to 1 p.m., the Faculty Colloquium Series for 2009-10 is sponsoring "Going Postal," presented by Jay Caplan, professor of French. This event will take place in the Mullins Room, Lewis-Sebring Commons.

Students who are thinking of a career in entrepreneurship, the law, or combination of each are encouraged to attend December 4’s Cookies with the Career Center series. Dave Wilson, a career litigation and employment attorney who just partnered with others to form their own specialized firm, and Tom Cronin, an inveterate career changer who has been a banker, a management consultant, an owner of a sporting goods manufacturer and healthcare distributor (as well as an urban high school math teacher), will discuss their careers, tell ‘war’ stories, and share thoughts on starting a career amidst the wide range of options available to Amherst graduates.

"The Mistakes Madeline Made," by Elizabeth Meriwether, will be directed by Peter Lobdell. Edna is working for a company devoted to taking care of a hugely wealthy family. We follow Edna’s interactions with her boss and another rather eccentric employee. At the same time, we learn that Edna’s brother was a journalist who has died in Iraq. "The Mistakes Madeline Made" is an existential comedy about survivor guilt and a moving testimonial to the power of affection. The title doesn’t refer to any character, but rather to an article by Dr. Joyce Brothers, “What Every Woman Ought to Know About Love and Marriage.” There is open seating, and no reservations are required. As part of "Voices for the Voiceless," there will be a discussion panel with a few of the performing poets. Please come and exchange your thoughts and ideas with the artists and learn more about their craft.
