| 6:15 p.m.-7:45 p.m. | Orchestrating the Dialogue: Integrating Research into Your Writing Charles Pratt HallWriting a research paper is a bit like entering an ongoing conversation, a bit like translating for two (or more) speakers of different languages and a bit like introducing people who seem to have something in common but haven’t met yet. These analogies are all well and good—they make research writing sound like the stuff of cocktail –but the actual act of managing other people’s ideas and words while maintaining your own voice and ideas can be tricky to do well. This workshop will help writers become more comfortable with that process. We’ll discuss how to seamlessly integrate quotations and paraphrases into your prose; balance your ideas with others'; avoid accidental plagiarism; and engage your sources in a dialogue, rather than letting them speak for you or overshadow your own ideas. This class is taught by Writing Associate Jessica Gorman. Preregistration on the Writing Center Web site is required and is limited to 12 students. |
