This is a follow-up to the recent Dinner Forum on Activism and Advocacy at Amherst, but all are welcome to attend.
6:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m."Taking a 'Gap Year'" Career Center
Taking a “gap year” sounds like a cool idea: Do something off the beaten path, then settle down with a focused plan a little later. In truth, a gap year can actually help you become a more focused and marketable job seeker or graduate school applicant. It can also allow you to explore options you may not have time to pursue while you’re a full-time student. You don’t want to just end up on your parents’ couch, though. Come to “Taking a Gap Year,” and learn about goal-setting, resources and strategies on Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. in the Career Center events room.
6:00 p.m.Field Hockey vs. Husson Gooding Field
7:00 p.m.-Nov 12 8:00 p.m.Amherst China Initiative Information Session - Summer Language Program Fayerweather Hall
The Amherst China Initiative program is designed for Amherst students (all classes) to come to China to teach English, to learn Chinese and to travel around China. The program was established by a group of Asia-based Amherst alumni and requires no previous language or teaching experience. The cost of the program is $1,550 and lasts five weeks (June to July or July to August), with need-blind funding available. Amherst students will teach low-income students at the Zhejiang University of Technology and will receive comprehensive Chinese instruction from the University's professors and private language training institutes. This program also emphasizes cultural exploration and immersion in a variety of traveling opportunities and cultural activities. Amherst alum and managing director Jason Kung '08 will be holding two information sessions about the program, on Wednesday, November 11th at 7:00pm, and on Thursday, November 12, at 7 p.m., both in Fayerweather 113. For more information, please visit the website at www.amherstchina.com or email info@amherstchina.com
7:00 p.m.Summer Institute in Art Museum Studies (SIAMS) Information Session Fayerweather Hall
Have you ever wondered what kinds of art careers exist in the museum world? Learn about how you can turn your interest in art history into a rewarding career in the arts. The SIAMS program at Smith College offers students the opportunity to go behind the scenes in some of the best museums, galleries and auction houses in the Northeast to meet with professionals in the field. In addition to seminar-style classroom instruction and frequent trips, the program’s 15 participants gain practical museum experience by creating an exhibition at the Smith College Museum of Art. SIAMS is a six-week, co-ed, residential program designed for incoming juniors and seniors and recent graduates from the US and abroad. Now in its fifth year, the program has provided its participants with insight into the museum field and significant support in realizing professional and academic goals. Come hear about this groundbreaking summer program from SIAMS alumnae at Amherst. This session will be hosted by Katrina Greene, 2007 SIAMS participant and Andrew W. Mellon Post-Baccalaureate Curatorial Fellow at the Mead Art Museum, and Ashley Hogan ’11, 2009 SIAMS participant.
